About the “100 Years of the 1928 Building” Project
Originally designed by Goichi Takeda, the former Kyoto Branch Office of the Mainichi Shimbun faced the threat of demolition in 1998, following the newspaper’s relocation.
That’s when the Dohjidai Gallery, which was located on the first floor at the time, collaborated with artists to promote the values of the building and successfully revived it as the “1928 Building”, a hub for artistic and cultural exchange.
In 2028, the building will celebrate its 100th anniversary. To reflect on its 100-year-long history and 30 years of rebirth, and to envision its next 100 years, voluntary members from Kyoto University Architecture and the Dohjidai Gallery will jointly conduct research and exhibitions leading up to the 2028 anniversary exhibition.
