Book introduction

Gustave Courbet: Representing Women explores the evolving portrayal of women in Courbet’s art, re-examining his works beyond conventional interpretations. A leading figure in 19th-century Realism, Courbet depicted women in diverse ways—from unidealized nudes to scandalous social scenes—challenging artistic norms. This book analyzes his female representations across three key periods: the 1840s, when he experimented with Romantic influences; the 1850s, marked by his Realist Manifesto and controversial Salon works; and the 1860s, when he engaged with academic traditions while defying institutional expectations. By comprehensively examining his Salon submissions, this study elucidates Courbet’s artistic and political beliefs and reveals how his representations of women evolved alongside his artistic maturity. His portrayal of women played a crucial role in his pursuit of Réalisme and served as a vehicle for articulating his artistic theory. Ultimately, this book provides a renewed perspective on the role of women in his oeuvre and his contributions to 19th-century art.
