Chapter on culture and emotions by Associate Professor Masataka Nakayama and Professor Yukiko Uchida to be published as part of upcoming book on emotion theory

2025.04.26

A new chapter on the link between cultural context and emotional experience by Associate Professor Masataka Nakayama and Professor Yukiko Uchida of the IFOHS, titled “Emotions Shaped by Culture: A Cultural Psychological Perspective” , will be published as part of the upcoming book “If Emotions Are Constructed: What Does That Mean for the World? — Multidisciplinary Perspectives on Barrett’s Theory of Constructed Emotion”.

This book, scheduled for release in late April 2025, introduces the idea that emotions are socially constructed, not universal, using recent neuroscience and Barrett’s theory to challenge traditional views and inform both clinicians and curious readers. In their chapter, which will appear in part 2 of the book, Nakayama and Uchida will provide an overview of cultural psychology through the lens of emotion, and also offer insights into its implications for health.
